Carlsbad Municipal Code Title 21 (zoning) prohibits any exterior signs, window displays, or advertising identifying a home occupation. No signage of any kind may indicate a business is operating from a residential dwelling.
Under Carlsbad Municipal Code Chapter 21.10 (Residential Zones) and the home occupation performance standards, a home-based business must be conducted entirely within the dwelling and cause no change to its residential character. This expressly prohibits on-site signs, nameplates advertising the business, illuminated displays, window lettering, or any outdoor evidence of the home occupation. Vehicle signage (magnetic door signs on a work truck) parked in the driveway may also be restricted. Business licenses issued under Title 5 are conditioned on compliance with these zoning limitations, and the Coastal Zone overlay imposes additional signage restrictions west of I-5.
Zoning violation: $100 first offense, $200 second within 12 months, $500 each additional (Municipal Code §1.08.010 general penalty). Continued violation can trigger business license revocation and administrative citation process.
