Perth Amboy, NJ Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Home occupations in the City of Perth Amboy are conditional uses. Chapter 430 lists them as a conditional use in the R-60 Residential Zone (§ 430-13C) and in the R-M Residential Zone (§ 430-16), subject to the conditional use provisions of Article VIII. The sign standard sits in § 430-58E(4)(j). The business gets one (1) nameplate sign identifying the home business, capped at one (1) square foot in area. It can be attached to the building or freestanding, and it must be set back at least ten (10) feet from the street right-of-way.

Paragraph (c) of the same standard adds that no display of products shall be visible from the street, so a storefront-style window display is out. Paragraph (k)[4] goes further: there shall be no exterior storage of materials and no other exterior indication of the home occupation or variation from the residential character of the principal buildings. In the R-M Residential Zone the door closes completely, because under no circumstances shall exterior displays or signs be permitted there. The definition of HOME OCCUPATION in § 430-5 repeats the ban on exterior display and exterior signs, and it points to the sign rules for anything that is allowed.

Those sign rules are in Article XI. Under § 430-62A(1), any signs not specifically permitted are prohibited. The zone-by-zone sign list in § 430-62H gives the R-60 Residential Zone one nonilluminated residential nameplate sign of not more than one (1) square foot on any one side. For the R-25 Residential Zone it adds one indirect illuminated, nonflashing wall, freestanding or projecting sign indicating a permitted home occupation, also not exceeding one (1) square foot on any one side.
