Under the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance (Appendix A), home occupations must be conducted without any external evidence of commercial activity. This means no signs, nameplates, window displays, or advertising visible from the street or neighboring properties. Chapter 18 (Sign Regulations) governs all signage in the city and does not provide a category for home business signs in residential zones. Any signage for a home occupation would violate both the home occupation conditions and the sign regulations. This strict prohibition is designed to preserve the residential character of neighborhoods.
Signage violations for home occupations may result in citations from Code Enforcement and/or Building Inspection. Fines up to $2,000. Signs must be removed immediately upon notice.
