Springfield permits only one non-illuminated home-occupation sign, not exceeding two square feet and attached to the principal building, under Zoning Code Section 155.045(c)(3). Separately, the residential sign rules in Section 155.311 cap a residential nameplate indicating a permitted occupation at one square foot per dwelling unit.
The City of Springfield restricts home-business signage in two places in the Zoning Ordinance. Section 155.045(c)(3) provides that a home occupation must have no exterior storage of materials and no exterior indication of the home occupation except for a sign not exceeding two square feet in size, non-illuminated, and attached to the principal building. Within the residential sign regulations, Section 155.311(a) provides that for residential buildings other than multiple dwellings, one non-illuminated nameplate with an area not exceeding one square foot, indicating only the name or address of the occupant or a permitted occupation, is allowed for each dwelling unit. Section 155.315 adds that any such residential sign may not extend more than 20 feet above ground, must sit at least ten feet from the front property line, and is limited to one sign per use, building, or dwelling unit. Free-standing commercial signs, illuminated signs, and signage advertising prices or products are not permitted for a home occupation in a residential district. The practical limit for a home-occupation sign is therefore a small, non-illuminated nameplate attached to the home.
A home-occupation sign larger than the permitted size, illuminated, free-standing, or otherwise advertising the business beyond a permitted nameplate violates Section 155.045(c)(3) and the residential sign provisions of Sections 155.311 and 155.315, and is subject to City zoning enforcement and sign removal.
