Port Hueneme allows home-based businesses in residential zones under PHMC zoning provisions, subject to conditions that maintain the residential character of the neighborhood. A home occupation permit is required.
PHMC zoning provisions allow home occupations as an accessory use in residential zones. The business must be clearly secondary to the residential use. Prohibited activities typically include those generating excessive traffic, noise, odor, or storage of hazardous materials. The business must be conducted entirely within the dwelling. No external evidence of the business (signage, equipment, commercial vehicles) is permitted. Only residents of the dwelling may be employed in the home business. Community Development at (805) 986-6559 processes home occupation permits.
Operating a home business without a permit or in violation of conditions may result in Code Compliance citations and order to cease operations. Repeated violations may result in business license revocation.
