Oak Park encourages native plant landscaping and has adopted a natural landscaping ordinance allowing alternatives to traditional turf lawns. The village permits native prairie plantings, rain gardens, and pollinator-friendly landscapes in residential yards provided they are maintained in a neat and orderly manner and do not create sight-line hazards at intersections.
Oak Park's zoning and property maintenance codes allow natural landscaping as an alternative to conventional turf grass. Native plant gardens, prairie plantings, and rain gardens are permitted in front, side, and rear yards. Plantings must be maintained to prevent a neglected appearance and must not exceed the village's vegetation height limits within required setback areas near sidewalks and streets. Corner lots must maintain clear sight triangles at intersections. The village participates in Cook County's rain garden and green infrastructure initiatives, and residents may be eligible for stormwater management rebates when installing rain gardens or bioswales with native plants. Illinois law (525 ILCS 45/1) protects the right of property owners to maintain managed natural landscapes. The Oak Park Conservatory and the village's environmental services division provide resources on approved native species for the region.
Natural landscapes that appear abandoned or create code complaints may receive a notice of violation. If vegetation exceeds height limits in regulated setback areas, fines start at $50 per day. Failure to maintain sight triangles at corners can result in the village cutting the vegetation and billing the property owner.
