Oak Park, IL Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

Village Code section 20-7-14 makes it illegal for the owner of real estate in Oak Park to refuse or neglect to cut weeds once they exceed eight inches (8") in height, and the ordinance defines weeds to include grass for this purpose. Cook County, Illinois residents and landlords cannot rely on infrequent mowing here; the 8-inch line applies Village-wide on improved lots and is enforced without a warning grace period built into the text itself.

If an owner neglects or refuses to cut, section 20-7-15 lets the Village send crews to cut the weeds itself, and afterward the Village may spray the lot with weedkiller to reduce regrowth, even if no weeds are visibly growing at the time of spraying. That spraying can continue year to year until the owner resumes maintenance and notifies the Village of that fact in writing, per the same section. Section 20-7-16 then lets the Village record a lien against the property for the cost of any cutting or spraying it performs, using the same notice-of-lien procedure set out in section 20-7-10 for other nuisance cleanups.

Enforcement is not limited to one office: section 20-7-19 assigns citation authority to the Police Department, Housing Division, Building and Zoning Division, Health Department, and Public Works Department, any of which can issue a citation for an overgrown lot. Section 20-7-20 lets a cited owner avoid prosecution by paying $125 within ten business days of receiving the citation; contest it or miss that window and the maximum penalty for a violation of the article climbs to $750, per Ordinance 18-454 (effective 1-1-2019, amended by Ordinance 19-119 in 2019).
