Tree removal permit rules in Galloway Township, NJ — sometimes called heritage tree, protected tree, or street tree ordinances — list which trees require a permit before you can cut them down.
Galloway Township requires a tree removal permit before cutting or removing any tree, except for the exemptions in § 233-52E (dead, dying, diseased, damaged or hazardous trees, and certain lot-improvement cuts). Pinelands rules add further limits.
Under Chapter 233 (Land Management), § 233-52, no tree may be cut or removed from any Township lands without a tree removal permit, with the exception of exemptions in § 233-52E. Exemptions include trees that are dead, dying or obviously diseased; trees that have suffered significant damage; trees whose angle or growth makes them a hazard; and removal of undesirable, competitive, diseased or damaged trees to improve remaining trees on a lot. Applications go to the Zoning Officer. Because most of Galloway lies in the Pinelands Area, Article X standards (§§ 233-67 to 233-84) also apply.
Removing a regulated tree without the required permit is a Land Management (zoning) violation enforced by the Zoning Officer, subject to municipal-court penalties and possible replacement requirements.
