Sunrise bans 'tree abuse': no hatracking, topping, or over-pruning a tree under 30 feet, and cuts must follow ANSI A-300 and Z-133 standards. Commercial tree trimmers need a business tax receipt and certificate of competency.
Under Sec. 16-173 of Sunrise's Land Development Code, hatracking (topping), pruning that reduces the height or spread of a tree under 30 feet, bark stripping, and cuts that do not meet ANSI A-300 standards are 'tree abuse' and prohibited. Removing dead, diseased, or weak branches consistent with ANSI standards is allowed. Every owner of a tree overhanging a street must keep a 6-foot-8-inch clearance over the sidewalk and remove dead or dangerous limbs (Sec. 16-166). Any firm in the business of pruning trees needs a Broward County or Sunrise business tax receipt and a certificate of competency. Trim before June 1 for hurricane safety; mangroves are separately state-protected under Fla. Stat. §403.9321.
