It is unlawful to run any system in a way that wastes water, including watering impervious surfaces such as driveways and sidewalks. New automatic systems covering more than one acre installed since the ordinance took effect must carry a rain-sensing shutoff device that stops irrigation during rainfall.
Section 20-345 exempts hand-watering with a self-canceling nozzle, drip or micro-irrigation systems, reclaimed or reuse-water irrigation, system testing and repair, water-main flushing, and pesticide or fungicide watering by licensed operators. New sod and landscaping get a phased grace period: unlimited watering on the planting day, any-day watering for the first 30 days, and a four-day schedule (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday) from day 31 through day 90, limited to the newly planted area unless it covers at least half of an irrigation zone.
