Sec. 27-1326, repeated with the same substantive language across each residential zoning district's use regulations, requires fences and walls enclosing any permitted use to comply with the town's building permit procedures, while hedges are instead governed by the sight-visibility standards in chapter 23. Height is tied to location on the lot: in the required side and rear yards of residentially zoned property, a fence or wall can run up to six feet, and a hedge along the rear, side corner or side yard line can reach eight feet.

In the front yard of any residential district, a fence, wall or hedge is capped at four feet, while commercial and industrial properties are allowed up to eight feet anywhere fencing is permitted. Near street intersections, the Code layers on a sight-triangle rule: within the area formed by a line connecting points 25 feet along the intersecting rights-of-way, fences, walls, hedges and vision-obstructing plantings are limited to two and one-half feet, measured from the average grade at the street centerlines. Materials matter too: no fence, wall or hedge in a residential district may incorporate broken glass, spikes, nails or similar material designed to injure a person or animal.
