Abington, PA Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

Section 98-2.D of the Township Code amends Section 302.4 of the adopted International Property Maintenance Code (2021 edition) 'to include a maximum height of 10 inches' for grass and weeds on exterior property areas. The amendment sits inside Chapter 98, Housing Standards, adopted April 13, 2023 by Ordinance No. 2205, which incorporates the IPMC 'as fully as if set out at length' and renames the enforcing body the 'Code Enforcement Division of the Township of Abington' under Section 98-2.B. The same ordinance adds Section 302.4.1, prohibiting the use of defoliants or herbicides to substantially (20% or more of a parcel) kill off vegetation just to avoid mowing or weed-pulling, unless the Code Enforcement Department approves the application in writing beforehand.

Because Chapter 98 adopts the IPMC by reference for structures and their exterior property areas, the 10-inch cap functions as Abington's standing height limit on improved, developed lots, distinct from the separate weeds-and-bamboo nuisance rule in Chapter 108 that covers both occupied and vacant ground. A homeowner whose lawn grows past 10 inches is subject to Code Enforcement action even without a neighbor complaint triggering it.
