Los Banos, CA Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

Los Banos sets a specific numeric limit on how tall grass and weeds may grow. 111(a)(6), part of the nuisance vegetation and junk provisions added by Ordinance 1059 in 2007, defines overgrown vegetation as nuisance vegetation when it encroaches into the public right-of-way, renders that right-of-way unsafe by blocking vision, is hazardous to pedestrian or vehicular traffic, or is capable of harboring insects, rats, mice or other vermin. The subsection then states a bright-line rule: grass or weeds must not grow to a height or bulk that creates a traffic, pedestrian or fire hazard or that is a blight on the neighborhood, and in no event may they exceed eight inches above ground level.

112 makes it unlawful, and an abatable nuisance, for any owner, lessee, occupant or person with charge, control or possession of property in the City to maintain or permit nuisance vegetation to exist, regardless of its source. 114 requires every property owner to keep the abutting half of the street or alley and the sidewalk strip clear as well. 104, including summary abatement and administrative citations, lets the City clear an overgrown lot itself and bill the owner rather than waiting for a criminal case.
