Commerce City, CO Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Sec. 11-1202(a) of the Commerce City Revised Municipal Code amends Section 109.5 of the Colorado Model Traffic Code as adopted locally, addressing golf carts and low-speed electric vehicles rather than bicycles directly, but it is the section governing how those vehicles interact with a bike lane. Under subsection (8), golf carts and low-speed vehicles must be driven in the right-hand lane, and when being overtaken by another vehicle, must be driven as close to the right-hand side as practicable; where a bicycle lane or a paved shoulder suitable for bicycle riding is present, the operator must drive in that bicycle lane or shoulder instead of the main travel lane.

Three exceptions apply: overtaking and passing a bicycle or vehicle going the same direction, preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway, and when reasonably necessary to avoid hazardous conditions like fixed or moving objects, parked or moving vehicles, pedestrians, animals or surface hazards. The same amendment caps golf carts and low-speed vehicles at twenty-five miles per hour on any roadway, bars them from roadways posted above thirty-five miles per hour except to cross directly at grade, prohibits their use on any limited-access highway, requires a valid driver's license to operate one, and requires equipment including a windshield, headlamps, tail lamps, stop lamps, turn signals, a horn and mirrors that comply with the relevant Colorado Revised Statutes sections.

Because Sec. 11-1201 strips out the Model Traffic Code's own penalty classifications, Sec. 11-1102 supplies the enforcement structure: a listed set of sections is classified as a misdemeanor, and violation of any other Traffic Code provision, including this one, is a traffic infraction subject to the general penalties in Chapter 1, Article III.
