Gilbert, AZ Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Code of Gilbert § 62-103 defines what may and may not use a marked bicycle lane. Under subsection (b), a person operating a micromobility device, the code's umbrella term for electric bicycles, electric personal assistive mobility devices, electric scooters, and electric standup scooters, may not enter any area posted against such operation, any public street with a speed limit above 25 mph, or, most relevant here, any designated bicycle lane. The only carve-out is for electric bicycles, which subsection (b)(2) expressly permits in bike lanes.

Devices excluded from the "micromobility" definition altogether, non-electric bicycles, mopeds, motor-driven cycles, motorcycles, motorized play vehicles, motorized skateboards, and motorized quadricycles, fall outside this section and are governed elsewhere in Chapter 62. Subsection (c) layers on operating rules that apply once a device is lawfully in the street or on a path: riders must obey traffic-control devices, yield the right-of-way to pedestrians, keep a safe following distance, and dismount and walk the device across any area where riding is prohibited rather than crossing it while mounted.

Riders may not exceed the posted speed limit, attach themselves to another vehicle, or carry packages that prevent safe steering. Nighttime riders of electric standup scooters or electric scooters must run a front white lamp visible 500 feet and a rear red reflector visible from 50 to 300 feet. The owner of the device is responsible for any damage it causes to public property.
