Abington, PA Noise from Specific Sources: Generator Noise (2026)

Section 106-3.L(1) sets decibel limits for air-conditioning and mechanical equipment by zoning district, but Section 106-3.L(1)(a), added November 8, 2012 by Ordinance No. 2031, carves out a distinct rule for permanently installed emergency generators. A generator used solely to supply electrical power to dwelling units in a residential zoning district can operate at up to 75 decibels, measured at the closest property line, well above the 55-decibel cap that otherwise applies in recreation-conservation and residence districts. The exception comes with two conditions: the generator's maintenance cycle must run only between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on weekdays, and the unit cannot be installed in a front-yard setback area.

A homeowner who runs a whole-house standby generator's weekly self-test on a Saturday morning, or installs the unit facing the street, falls outside the exception and back under the general 55-decibel limit. The Abington Health Department can order noncompliant equipment shut down and can grant up to a 30-day extension to bring it into compliance under Section 106-3.L(2).
