Lake Elsinore's noise ordinance, Chapter 17.176, singles out air-conditioning and air-handling equipment as a specific prohibited act in § 17.176.080(M) rather than leaving it only to the general exterior noise table. The section bars operating residential AC or air-handling equipment above set sound levels measured at three locations. At the neighboring property line, 5 feet above grade and no closer than 3 feet from any wall, the limit is 60 dBA for units installed before January 1, 1980, dropping to 55 dBA for units installed on or after that date.

At the center of a neighboring patio, the limits are 55 dBA for older units and 50 dBA for newer units, and outside the neighboring living-area window nearest the equipment, the same 55/50 dBA split applies. This equipment is also captured by the chapter's general definitions: § 17.176.020 lists air conditioners and refrigeration equipment as examples of a fixed noise source, subject to the general exterior noise limits of § 17.176.060, Table 1, which range from 40 dBA in single-family residential zones at night up to 75 dBA anytime in heavy industrial areas; the AC-specific standard in § 17.176.080(M) applies on top of, and is generally stricter than, the district-wide table.

The Community Development Director's Noise Control Officer investigates complaints under the measurement procedure of § 17.176.050, using a calibrated sound level meter positioned per that section's siting rules, and a homeowner cited for excess AC noise can request a variance from the Noise Control Officer under § 17.176.110, capped at 365 days.
