Amplified music rules in Davis, CA — also called sound permit, PA system, or live music ordinances — set decibel limits, time-of-day restrictions, and when permits are required.
Davis Municipal Code Article 24.04 requires a registration statement to use loudspeakers or sound-amplifying equipment outdoors, or at events over 100 people. Amplified sound is limited to four hours in any 24-hour period.
Under Davis Municipal Code Article 24.04, it is unlawful to operate a loudspeaker or sound-amplifying equipment on any street, park or public property, or at events over 100 people where noise is audible at the property plane, without first filing a registration statement with the police chief at least 16 days ahead. Approved amplified events are exempt from Table 1 limits but remain capped by Section 24.02.030 and may not run past midnight in residential zones (12:30 a.m. elsewhere) on weekend and pre-holiday nights, or 10:00 p.m. other nights. Section 24.04.070 limits amplified equipment to four total hours per 24-hour period, permits only music or human speech, and requires speakers aimed away from homes.
Operating amplified sound without a required registration, past cutoff times, or beyond four hours is an infraction; a third offense in 24 hours lets police close the event, arrest the host, or seize the equipment under DMC 24.01.030.
