Ogden, UT Noise Ordinances: Amplified Music & Outdoor Sound (2026)

Section 12-14-6(D) of Ogden's noise chapter separately restricts sound amplification devices and musical instruments across several settings. if the sound is clearly audible at the property line, and barred at any hour if it is clearly audible inside a dwelling with all exterior doors and windows closed. In a parked or moving vehicle on a public street, amplified sound can't be clearly audible, or cause perceptible vibration, at 30 feet from the vehicle, or be audible at all inside another closed vehicle. In a public park, a sound amplification device can't be clearly audible from 75 feet away unless the operator has a special permit under Section 12-14-8.

Commercial use of an amplification device on a public street, for advertising, instructions, or music, needs a permit under Section 11-5-6. Mounting a speaker so sound projects from a building onto a public street for advertising or to attract passersby is barred outright. None of these limits require a decibel meter reading; the "clearly audible" test from Section 12-14-3, which uses a stereo's rhythmic bass line as its worked example, is what an enforcement officer applies. A violation is a class B misdemeanor under Section 12-14-10, subject to Title 1, Chapter 4 penalties, and the offending device's continued operation can also be treated as a public nuisance.
