Amplified music rules in South San Gabriel, CA โ also called sound permit, PA system, or live music ordinances โ set decibel limits, time-of-day restrictions, and when permits are required.
South San Gabriel is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, so amplified music is governed by County Code Title 12, Chapter 12.08 (Noise Control), not a city ordinance. Residential limits are 50 dBA daytime (7 a.m.-10 p.m.) and 45 dBA nighttime (10 p.m.-7 a.m.) at the property line under Sec. 12.08.390. Amplified-sound events on private property near residential zones require permits and are heavily restricted at night.
Los Angeles County Code Chapter 12.08 establishes the noise rules for all unincorporated areas, including South San Gabriel โ a 0.8-square-mile CDP of about 7,900 residents east of San Gabriel city limits. Sec. 12.08.390 sets exterior noise standards: 50 dBA daytime and 45 dBA nighttime for residential property, 55/50 dBA semi-residential, and 60/55 dBA commercial. Amplified music from DJs, live bands, parties, and outdoor speakers is treated as a discrete noise source and subject to those property-line limits. Sec. 12.08.400 prohibits any sound 'so loud, raucous, jarring or unusual' that it disturbs the peace, and Sec. 12.08.500 makes operating amplified equipment in violation of those limits a misdemeanor. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Temple Station serves South San Gabriel) responds to complaints; first calls usually result in a verbal warning. Permits for amplified events are issued by the County's Department of Public Health Environmental Health.
Violations are misdemeanors punishable by fines up to $1,000 and/or up to six months in jail under Sec. 12.08.500. Most enforcement is via warning, with citation on the second call. Equipment used in a violation may be impounded.
