Full Breakdown

Township Code § 281-7B(4) makes it a specific prohibited noise for any owner to keep an animal that, through frequent or habitual howling, barking, meowing, squawking or other noisemaking, causes a "noise disturbance": defined as sound that annoys, disturbs or endangers the comfort, repose or peace of others. The rule also reaches animal pounds and other facilities that hold or treat animals. The Police Department enforces the chapter and may issue a summons or a 24-hour written notice to abate before summons.

Violations & Fines

Civil penalty up to $3,000 per offense under N.J.S.A. 13:1G-14 (§ 281-13); each day of continued violation is a separate offense, and police may first issue a 24-hour written notice to abate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a single bark a violation in Brick Township?
No. The ordinance targets frequent or habitual barking that rises to a "noise disturbance" annoying or disturbing others, not an isolated bark.
What happens first if my dog is reported for barking?
Police may skip a summons and instead serve a 24-hour written notice to abate; ignoring that notice is itself a separate violation.
