Fauquier County, VA Noise Ordinances: Quiet Hours (2026)

Section 13.5-3(a) defines separate daytime and nighttime windows that set which decibel ceiling applies. Daytime runs 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Saturday, and 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday. Nighttime is the balance of each day: 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 11:00 p.m. Friday to 9:00 a.m. Saturday, 11:00 p.m. Saturday to 9:00 a.m. Sunday, and 10:00 p.m. Sunday to 7:00 a.m. Monday. During daytime hours the residential ceiling is 65 dBA at the property line (or plainly audible inside a neighbor's closed residence); at night it drops to 55 dBA under the same plainly-audible alternative test.

The same daytime/nighttime windows also govern § 13.5-3(e)'s construction-equipment curfew, which bars bulldozers, cranes, jackhammers and similar equipment outside those hours unless the county administrator authorizes an exception in writing, and § 13.5-4(b)'s exemptions for construction, gardening and refuse collection, which may not start before 9:00 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays (refuse collection may begin at 6:00 a.m.). A first violation of the chapter draws a $250 civil penalty and $500 for each later offense under § 13.5-2.
