Quiet hours in Riverside, CA — also called the noise ordinance, nighttime noise rules, or residential quiet time — define the hours during which excessive noise is prohibited.
Riverside Municipal Code Title 7 sets nighttime quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., with a 45 dBA exterior limit at residential property lines at night and 55 dBA during the day.
RMC § 7.25.010 and Table 7.25.010A establish the city's exterior noise standards. In residential land use categories, the exterior noise standard is 45 dBA from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. (night) and 55 dBA from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (day). RMC § 7.35.010(B)(11) further makes it unlawful to permit any noise that is plainly audible at a distance of 25 feet from the source between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., or 50 feet during daytime hours. Sound is measured with an A-weighted sound level meter at slow response at the complainant's property line per § 7.20.010. The general nuisance provision in § 7.35.010(A) lets officers consider time of day, duration, proximity to sleeping areas, and zoning when judging whether a violation exists.
Per RMC § 7.15.010 (as amended in 2025): first violation $500, second violation within the same period $750, third or subsequent violation $1,000. Violations may also be prosecuted as misdemeanors or infractions under § 7.15.005(C), with each day constituting a separate offense. Code Enforcement and the Riverside Police Department share enforcement authority.
