Lenexa, KS Outdoor Cooking: BBQ & Propane Rules (2026)

The City of Lenexa, Kansas, regulates grills through Section 4-8-B-7, which amends Section 308.1.4 of the International Fire Code. Charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices cannot be stored or operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. The rule covers both use and storage, so a charcoal grill parked on a wood deck of an apartment building is a violation even when it is not lit.

Two exceptions apply. The first exempts cooking devices associated with one- and two-family dwellings and townhomes, so a homeowner in a detached house or townhome is not bound by the balcony and 10-foot limit. The second covers every other building type, such as apartments and condominiums: where the buildings, balconies and decks are protected by an automatic sprinkler system, only gas cooking devices are allowed. A propane or natural gas grill can therefore sit on a protected balcony in a multifamily building, but a charcoal grill cannot. Separately, Section 903.3.1.2.1 in Section 4-8-A-15 requires sprinkler protection for exterior balconies, decks and ground floor patios of dwelling units and sleeping units in buildings using the residential sprinkler standard.

Other Lenexa fire rules sit beside this one. Section 4-8-B-6 sends open burning, recreational fires and portable outdoor fireplaces to Article 3-5-D of the Lenexa City Code, and Section 4-8-B-8 requires that lighted matches, cigarettes and other burning objects not be discarded where they could ignite combustible material. The Fire Code is the 2018 International Fire Code adopted in Section 4-8-B-1, and the fire chief or Fire Code Official administers it.
