Moore, OK Outdoor Cooking: BBQ & Propane Rules (2026)

Moore adopted the 2018 International Fire Code at Code § 13-101 and locally amended Section 308.1.4, Open-Flame Cooking Devices, to read that open-flame cooking devices, charcoal grills, and other similar cooking devices cannot be located or used on combustible balconies or decks, or within 10 feet (3048 mm) of combustible construction. The city then added its own exception structure for propane appliances: Exception 1 allows LP-gas containers despite the balcony and 10-foot rule, but each container is limited to a water capacity no greater than 20 pounds (roughly a standard 5-gallon barbecue tank), with an aggregate LP-gas capacity across all containers at a location capped at 100 pounds, or five containers.

Exception 2 applies the same 20-pound single-container limit but sets a tighter 40-pound aggregate, or two containers, where the building's balconies and decks are protected by an approved automatic sprinkler system, since sprinklered buildings still receive some tank allowance but not the full unsprinklered amount. This rule is aimed squarely at apartment and multifamily balconies, where propane grills stored or used against a combustible wall or railing pose a fire-spread risk to neighboring units. Violating the fire code amendment is enforced the same way as the rest of the adopted International Fire Code: under Section 110.4 as locally amended, violators are punished under Moore Code § 1-108, and each day a violation continues after notice is a separate offense.
