Chesapeake defines abandoned vehicles under City Code Section 70-195 as vehicles left on public property over 48 hours or inoperable vehicles on private property over 60 days. Abandoned vehicles are towed and may be sold at auction after 15-day notice.
Chesapeake City Code Section 70-195 (and VA Code 46.2-1200) authorize removal of abandoned vehicles. On public streets, vehicles left over 48 hours after tagging with an abandonment sticker may be towed. On private property, inoperable vehicles (missing wheels, tags, or engine) left visible for 60 days violate zoning and can be abated. The city sends certified notice to the last registered owner and lienholder. After 15 days without claim, vehicles go to DMV title transfer and may be sold at sheriffs auction or junked.
Tow fees 150-300 dollars plus 25-50 dollars/day storage. Inoperable vehicle zoning fine 100-500 dollars per day. Owner responsible for all costs.
