Chesapeake, VA Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Sec. 74-243(a) opens: "No person shall park a vehicle, except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with the directions of a police officer or traffic control device, in any of the following places," then lists 20 specific locations. They include a sidewalk or the right-of-way between sidewalk and curb, in front of a public or private driveway, within an intersection or crosswalk, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, within 30 feet of a stop sign, yield sign or flashing beacon, within 50 feet of a railroad grade crossing, on a bridge or in a tunnel, in a fire lane (a flat $250.00 fine, separately stated), and no more than six inches from the curb. The list also reaches newer additions: blocking a curb ramp, and blocking mailbox delivery access between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with an eight-foot clear zone required on both approach and departure sides of the box.

Subsection (d) separately addresses wrong-way parking: "It shall be unlawful for any person to park a vehicle opposite to the general direction of traffic upon any one-way street, any divided highway, any highway where the posted speed limit is 35 miles per hour or greater, or the right-of-way of any one-way street, divided highway or highway where the posted speed limit is 35 miles per hour or greater." Subsection (e) lets the city or a property owner bypass the standard ticket process and have an offending vehicle towed instead, so long as a police officer is notified at the same time, with the owner billed for removal and storage.
