Kyle, TX Parking Rules: Abandoned Vehicles (2026)

Article VIII of Chapter 23, Junked, Wrecked, Abandoned Vehicles, defines an abandoned motor vehicle in section 23-211 as one that is inoperable, more than five years old, and left unattended on public property for more than 48 hours, or that remains on private property without the consent of the property owner for more than 48 hours; separate thresholds apply to state and county highway rights-of-way (48 hours) and turnpike or controlled-access highways (24 hours). A distinct 'junked vehicle,' the subject of Division 3, is any self-propelled vehicle lacking a current license plate or safety inspection sticker, or wrecked, dismantled or inoperable for more than 72 hours on public property or 30 days on private property; junked vehicles visible from a public place are declared a public nuisance under section 23-263.

The Kyle Police Department is authorized under section 23-237 to take an abandoned vehicle, watercraft or outboard motor into custody from public or private property. Section 23-238 requires the department to mail certified notice to the last registered owner and any lienholder within ten days, giving 20 days to reclaim the vehicle after paying towing and storage charges before the city may sell it at public auction under section 23-240. For junked vehicles, section 23-265 instead requires ten days' written notice and an opportunity for a municipal court hearing before the chief of police orders removal.
