Ankeny, IA Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Ankeny Code of Ordinances § 69.12 limits where heavy commercial vehicles may sit on City streets. Subsection 1 bans parking a motor truck with a freight capacity greater than one ton, or any trailer, semi-trailer, tractor, road tractor or truck tractor unit, on any portion of any street at any time, except for such reasonable time as is necessary to load or unload passengers, freight or other merchandise. Subsection 2 separately targets non-licensed construction equipment, banning it from a residential street for longer than two hours unless it is actively being used during normal working hours, so a contractor cannot leave an idle skid steer or backhoe parked overnight on a residential block.

Subsection 3 addresses tractor-trailer and semi-trailer rigs specifically in residential areas, capping standing or parking time at two hours, but allowing a driver to temporarily stand or park while actually engaged in loading or unloading the vehicle; that exception also covers a disconnected trailer left by the tractor or towing vehicle. None of these limits apply to the brief loading and unloading windows built into each subsection, and § 69.01 separately lets the City post additional traffic control devices restricting parking further on specific streets.

A violation of the Traffic Code's parking chapter is enforced by the Ankeny Police Department, and under § 70.03 an uncontested parking violation is charged through a $15 notice of fine payable to the City Clerk unless a different scheduled fine applies.
