Ankeny, IA Parking Rules: Snow Removal Parking Rules (2026)

Ankeny Code of Ordinances § 69.14 lets the City Manager declare a citywide Snow Ordinance in effect by public media notice to facilitate snow and ice removal. Once declared, no person may park, abandon or leave any vehicle unattended on any public street, alley, or on-street parking space anywhere in the City, with one carve-out: the District at Prairie Trail and Uptown business districts. Those two districts get a narrower rule under subsection 3: rather than a blanket ban, on-street parking there is prohibited only between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. while the Snow Ordinance is in effect, letting daytime business-district parking continue during a snow event.

The boundaries of the Prairie Trail and Uptown districts are defined separately in the City's Snow and Ice Control Plan on file with the Public Works Department, not spelled out street by street in the ordinance itself. Subsection 4 makes the Snow Ordinance's parking rule override every other parking regulation in the Traffic Code for as long as it stays in effect, so a spot that is normally legal to park in becomes illegal the moment the declaration is active. A related section, § 69.15, separately bans parking on three named narrow or one-way segments (parts of SW Des Moines Street and SW Prairie Trail Parkway) any time snow or freezing rain is actively falling, covering or drifting, independent of whether the citywide Snow Ordinance has been declared. Violating either section carries a scheduled fine of $40 under § 70.03, higher than the standard $15 parking fine.
