Fort Collins, CO Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 1214, Parking certain vehicles prohibited, targets oversized and commercial-style vehicles on public streets citywide, not just in residential zones. Subsection (1) makes it unlawful to park any motor vehicle exceeding six thousand pounds empty weight, any motor vehicle exceeding twenty feet in length, or any motor coach, trailer coach, recreational vehicle, trailer, semi-trailer, or truck tractor, or any part of such vehicle, on public property, including any street, alley or right-of-way. A trailer-and-tow-vehicle combination over twenty feet long or eight feet wide is banned outright even if neither piece alone would exceed the limit.

Subsection (1)(e) clarifies that towing gear, bumpers and attached cargo racks don't count toward the length measurement. Subsection (2) carves out two exceptions: commercial vehicles actively and expeditiously loading or unloading, or performing utility, construction or right-of-way work with the equipment they're built for; and RVs, trailer coaches or trailers parked directly in front of the frontage of the single-family or multi-family dwelling of the vehicle's registered owner, capped at 48 hours while being loaded or unloaded. Subsection (3) separately bans parking or storing any oversized vehicle anywhere in the City, public or private, in a way that blocks pedestrian or vehicle traffic or an intersection's sightlines.

Subsection (4) closes the obvious workaround: moving the vehicle to a different spot on the right-of-way is not a defense; it must leave the right-of-way entirely to come into compliance.
