Gilroy, CA Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 15.68 flatly prohibits parking or standing a commercial vehicle with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or more on any street, or portion of a street, located in a residential district. The section replaced an earlier version repealed in 1975 and was re-adopted in 1989. It works alongside the city's truck-route system: Section 15.100 lets the city administrator sign streets as truck traffic routes for vehicles over 10,000 pounds, and Section 15.101 makes it unlawful to operate, stop or park such a vehicle on any street not so designated, with a narrow exception allowing a delivery vehicle to leave the nearest truck route by the shortest reasonable path between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. to load or unload at a destination, provided the truck is not left unattended.

Section 15.68 targets weight, not vehicle type, so a heavy pickup or box truck used commercially is covered the same as a tractor-trailer once it crosses the 10,000-pound threshold; smaller commercial vehicles and any vehicle on a designated truck route are unaffected. Enforcement in residential areas falls to the Gilroy Police Department and to salaried city employees assigned to traffic or parking enforcement.
