Kauai County, HI Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Chapter 18, Article 1 of the Kaua'i County Code does not impose a blanket, code-wide ban on commercial or oversized trucks parking or driving in residential areas. Instead, § 18-1.2 gives the County Council authority to restrict, road by road, the use of any street or highway under County jurisdiction 'if it deems necessary for the purpose of preserving the public health, safety and welfare,' including by prohibiting use by a commercial vehicle or by specific types of vehicles or by vehicle weight, load or size.

The same Section also lets the Council restrict loudspeaker use from vehicles, income-generating use of roadways without a Finance Director- and County Engineer-approved revocable permit, and use of a road for processions or assemblages. Under § 18-1.3, no restriction the Council adopts by resolution takes effect, and no penalty attaches, until the resolution is published once in a newspaper of general circulation on Kaua'i and, where only specified roads are restricted, warning signs are posted at the site. That means whether a particular residential street actually bars commercial vehicles depends on whether the Council has passed a resolution for that street and posted the required signage, not on a single island-wide rule. Anyone convicted of violating a restriction the Council has adopted is fined under § 16-21.6 of the Kaua'i Traffic Code.
