Montgomery, AL Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

City Code Sec. 27-385(b) targets long-term commercial and oversized vehicle parking on residential streets, separately from the downtown overnight limit in subsection (a) of the same section. It is unlawful to park a covered trailer or vehicle on any street within a residential section of the city unless the owner is engaged in the continual act of making a delivery, loading, or providing a service, or has first obtained a permit from the chief of police. Subsection (c) defines exactly which vehicles are covered: buses, both passenger and commercial trailers, house or camping trailers, mobile homes, and any motor vehicle that is required to carry truck tags when regularly operated in Alabama.

The rule specifically excludes station wagons and small trucks no larger than a passenger automobile, so an ordinary pickup does not trigger the permit requirement. Enforcement is direct: the Montgomery Police Department is authorized to remove an unattended covered vehicle or trailer left on a residential street to the nearest police-designated garage when the owner is not actively delivering, loading or servicing. After removal, an officer must notify the owner under the state vehicle-abandonment statute, Code of Ala. 1975, Sec. 32-13-1, and disposition of the vehicle follows the city's own abandoned-vehicle procedure at Sec. 27-13. This gives Montgomery residential streets real teeth against parked box trucks, tractor units and mobile homes without requiring a separate zoning enforcement action.
