Montgomery, AL Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

The city traffic engineer designates passenger and freight curb loading zones under Sec. 27-421 and posts signs or street markings stating the hours the zone is in effect. Within a marked passenger curb loading zone, Sec. 27-423(a) bars stopping, standing or parking for any purpose other than the expeditious loading or unloading of passengers, and even that use is capped at three minutes during the zone's posted hours; the passenger curb zone at the city regional airport terminal is exempt under Sec. 27-423(b) and follows the airport's own rule instead.

Freight curb loading zones run on a longer clock: Sec. 27-424 allows stopping only for the expeditious unloading, delivery, pickup or loading of materials during posted hours, and the stop cannot exceed 30 minutes unless the operator first obtains a special permit from the chief of police. Property owners or vehicle owners who need to load or unload at an angle to the curb, rather than parallel, can apply for a separate permit under Sec. 27-422, which lets the traffic engineer set the specific terms and conditions; violating any term of that permit is itself a separate offense. None of these curb-loading sections write their own penalty, so a citation defaults to the Code's general fine schedule.
