Rochester, NY Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

City Code § 111-17 overrides the general 12-hour parking limit in § 111-16 for a defined list of vehicle types: trucks, commercial vehicles, trailers, recreational vehicles, tractors and tractor-trailer combinations. The driver and the owner of any such vehicle are both barred from letting it sit parked on any city street for more than six hours. The section carves out an express exception for pickup trucks and passenger vans, which remain subject only to the ordinary 12-hour rule that applies to standard passenger vehicles, not the tighter six-hour commercial cap.

The section was last substantively amended in 1988 (Ord. No. 88-219), after an earlier 1960 amendment, and sits in Article I of Chapter 111 alongside the City's other stopping, standing and parking rules; it works together with the separate weight-limit rule in § 111-58, which bars trucks over three tons gross weight from most improved streets except for local delivery or the shortest route to load or unload. Because § 111-17 targets vehicle type rather than a specific zone or time of day, it applies citywide on any public street regardless of posted signage, unless a street-specific alternate regulation supersedes it.

The rule is aimed at keeping large commercial rigs, trailers and RVs from using residential and commercial streets as long-term storage, distinct from the loading-zone rules that govern brief commercial stops for deliveries.
