Full Breakdown

Los Angeles County Code § 15.64.075 bars parking a "nonconforming vehicle" on any highway, street, alley, public way, or public place in 21 listed unincorporated districts -- including Altadena, East Los Angeles, Ladera Heights, View Park/Windsor Hills, West Carson, and Whittier -- without a valid permit; in the Marina del Rey District the ban applies only between 1:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. A nonconforming vehicle is any trailer or vehicle measuring over 8 feet wide, 7.5 feet tall, or 20 feet long. This rule applies only within unincorporated Los Angeles County -- it does not reach the City of Los Angeles or any of the county's 87 incorporated cities, each of which sets its own oversized-vehicle parking rules.

Violations & Fines

Parking an oversized trailer or vehicle without a permit in a covered district is citable; permits are issued by the local Sheriff's Station or Parking Enforcement Office, capped at 24-30 per residence per year, each valid 24 hours (max two consecutive).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this apply to my street in unincorporated LA County?
Only if your community is one of the 21 listed districts, such as Altadena, East Los Angeles, or Whittier -- check the district boundary figures in § 15.64.075.
Can I ever park a boat or RV trailer on the street without a permit?
Yes, briefly, if it's actively loading/unloading, servicing the adjacent lot, or tied to construction work on that parcel.
