Salt Lake City, UT Parking Rules: Curb Color Rules (2026)

Salt Lake City Code § 12.56.310 starts with authority. The city transportation engineer is authorized to place and maintain appropriate signs or traffic markings that indicate standing or parking regulations, and under subsection A that placement follows a comprehensive study. A red curb in Salt Lake City is therefore an official traffic marking set by the engineer, and the color itself carries the legal message.

The section then says the traffic markings shall designate the zones, and red is item 1 on that list: "Red means no stopping, standing or parking at any time." Each part of that sentence does work. The rule names stopping, standing, and parking separately, so it reaches more than leaving a car unattended. A driver who pulls up to a red curb and waits behind the wheel is still stopping or standing in the zone. The words "at any time" mean the red zone is not limited to posted hours. There is no grace period and no exception for quick errands.

Subsection B is what makes the paint enforceable. When appropriate signs or traffic markings have been erected or placed according to the section, no person shall stop, stand or park a vehicle in any zone contrary to its provisions. The duty falls on the person with the vehicle, and it is triggered by the marking being in place. Because the section speaks of signs or traffic markings, the painted curb counts as notice of the restriction.
