Summary

Carlsbad bars required parking spaces from sitting in a home's front yard setback, with a narrow tandem-driveway exception for narrow older lots. Accessory dwelling units and short visitor-parking projects get separate, more flexible driveway allowances.

Required parking spaces shall be located on the same lot or building site as the buildings they are required to serve. Required parking shall not be located within the front yard setback. Required uncovered parking spaces may be located within the side and/or rear yard setback, provided that a 6-foot-high masonry wall (or some other solid material approved by the decision-making authority) is built along the property line adjacent to the setback area. Accessory dwelling units Same as parking required for primary residential use, with the following exceptions:

• May be located in the front or side yard setback; and

• May be located as a tandem space on a driveway.

Full Breakdown

060(A)(2), Table C, sets where required residential parking must sit. For one-family, two-family and multiple-family dwellings, required parking spaces must be located on the same lot or building site as the residence they serve, and required parking shall not be located within the front yard setback. Uncovered required spaces can go in a side or rear yard setback only if a 6-foot-high masonry wall, or another solid material the decision-making authority approves, is built along the property line next to the setback area. 030. A separate exception exists for existing substandard-frontage lots narrower than 50 feet: tandem parking is permitted within the front yard setback if there is a minimum of one space per dwelling unit within the setback and the front yard building setback is no less than 20 feet, or 10 feet to a second or third floor in the R-W zone.

Visitor parking for two- and multiple-family projects of 10 or fewer units outside the Beach Area Overlay Zone may also be located entirely within driveways in front of a unit's garage if every unit's driveway runs at least 20 feet deep, measured from the front property line or back of sidewalk to the structure. Garage sizes are separately fixed by Table D: a one-car garage needs a minimum 12-foot by 20-foot interior, and a two-car garage needs 20 feet by 20 feet.

Violations & Fines

Parking required spaces within the front yard setback outside these exceptions, or building a garage under the Table D minimum dimensions, is a zoning code violation the City Planner enforces; a wall required for a side- or rear-yard uncovered space that is not installed or maintained can trigger the same code enforcement process used for other zoning nonconformities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I park in my front yard in Carlsbad?
Required parking spaces cannot be located within the front yard setback under Carlsbad Municipal Code Section 21.44.060(A)(2), Table C. The only exceptions are accessory dwelling unit parking and tandem parking on lots with substandard frontage under 50 feet wide, both governed by the same table.
Does an ADU driveway count as parking in Carlsbad?
Yes. Table C under Section 21.44.060(A)(2) lets accessory dwelling unit parking sit in the front or side yard setback and allows a tandem space directly on the driveway, unlike parking required for the primary residence.
What size garage does Carlsbad require for one car?
Table D under Section 21.44.060(A)(3) sets a minimum interior dimension of 12 feet by 20 feet for a one-car garage, and 20 feet by 20 feet for a two-car garage serving the same unit.
