Coconut Creek, FL Parking Rules: EV Charging (2026)

Section 6-1, adopted by Ord. No. 2023-032 on November 9, 2023, is titled Electric Vehicle Charging Station Design Guidelines and sits in Chapter 6, Buildings and Building Regulations, of the Coconut Creek Code in Broward County, Florida. Its stated purpose is to serve public mobility needs, prepare for emerging electric vehicle technologies, improve air quality and support city sustainability goals, including climate change mitigation. The rules apply to residential, commercial or industrial developments or uses that elect to provide one (1) or more EV stations or EV ready locations.

A Level 2 charger is a minimum 240 volt station and a Level 3 charger is a DC fast charger, both as regulated and defined in the Florida Building Code at the time of permitting. Installed chargers must be at least Level 2 but can be Level 3. EV ready locations must have the wiring, conduit, receptacle or junction box and circuit breakers to support at least a Level 2 charger, installed up to the point where the station will sit to reach the parking space.

Outdoor residential chargers or EV ready infrastructure must be wall mounted at the most convenient but secure location to serve the space, and garage installation is recommended where indoor parking exists. Non-residential chargers must keep handicap access, including ensuring a plugged in cord does not block the route from parking space to sidewalk, and every sidewalk must keep a minimum five-foot clear path. Handicap accessible chargers are required where the Florida Building Code requires them, and retractable cords are strongly recommended for multi-user or public chargers.

Multi-family and non-residential stations need an identification sign reading Electric Vehicle Charging Station, with a sign face no greater than 24 inches by 18 inches, and color and letter size meeting Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices requirements. An optional instructional screen cannot exceed ten (10) inches diagonally, cannot face or be visible from a public right-of-way, cannot have sound except as needed for handicap accessibility, cannot emit odors, and must show a static display except while a vehicle charges. A compliant screen is not counted as a sign.
