Brookhaven, GA Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

Brookhaven leaves the location and the hours of curb loading zones to signs. Under section 17-215 the public works department determines where passenger and freight curb loading zones go, places and maintains the signs, and states on them the hours during which the zone rules apply. The zone rules bind during those posted hours.

Section 17-216 governs freight zones. In a marked freight curb loading zone, during the hours the zone rules are in effect, no one can stop, stand or park a truck for any purpose or length of time other than the expeditious unloading and delivery or pickup and loading of materials. Any other vehicle is also barred from stopping, standing or parking there for the unloading or loading of materials. Passenger vehicles get one carve-out: the driver can stop temporarily while actually engaged in loading and unloading passengers, so long as the stop does not interfere with a motor vehicle used for the transportation of materials that is waiting to enter or about to enter the zone.

Neighboring sections cover related cases. Section 17-205 lets the chief of police issue special permits to back a vehicle to the curb to load or unload merchandise or materials. A permit can go to the owner or lessee of real property or to the owner of the vehicle, and it is unlawful for the permittee or anyone else to violate its special terms or conditions. Section 17-217 keeps bus and taxicab drivers in a business district at bus stops and taxicab stands, with a temporary stop allowed for loading and unloading passengers, and section 17-218 keeps other vehicles out of designated bus stops and taxicab stands. Section 17-219 creates a no parking zone of 80 feet at all bus stops. In city parking lots, section 17-222 bars commercial or freight-carrying vehicles and trailers without written permission of the facilities department.
