Commerce City, CO Parking Rules: Overnight Parking (2026)

Commerce City added Section 1215 to its adopted Model Traffic Code by Ord. No. 2553, adopted December 4, 2023, codified at Revised Municipal Code § 11-1202(m). The section bars parking on any surface in a residential district other than a driveway or an approved parking area, or on a street segment where parking is permitted, and separately caps how long a vehicle may sit in front of someone else's home: no more than five hours immediately in front of a residence that isn't the parked vehicle's owner's own home.

The five-hour cap applies regardless of whether the space itself is legal to park in; the violation is being parked too long in front of a neighboring house rather than one's own address. Commerce City Police Department officers issue citations for violations under the Municipal Court's general penalty at Revised Municipal Code § 1-5, a fine up to $300, imprisonment up to 90 days, or both, since Section 1215 carries no penalty of its own. The section expressly preserves private enforcement: homeowners' association covenants or subdivision agreements that impose their own residential parking restrictions can still be enforced between the parties to those covenants, separate from any city citation.

Because the rule sits inside the city's Model Traffic Code amendments rather than a stand-alone parking ordinance, it applies citywide to residential districts and is distinct from the oversized-vehicle and recreational-vehicle parking limits found elsewhere in Chapter 11.
