Summary

In Hanford's residential and OR zones, RVs, boats, and trailers must be stored in an enclosed side or rear yard, garage, or carport rather than left out in the open.

In any residential zone district and in the OR zone district, no recreation vehicle, including...boat trailer, boat, pickup camper, motor home...shall be stored or parked, except within an enclosed side or rear yard or within a garage or carport. If a side or rear yard is not accessible due to existing legal permanent structures, a recreational vehicle or trailer may be parked in a driveway or adjacent to a driveway if it does not create a nuisance or safety problem as determined by the Community Development Director.

Full Breakdown

Hanford Municipal Code § 17.54.200 requires that camping trailers, boat trailers, utility trailers, boats, pickup campers, motor homes, dune buggies, and similar recreational vehicles parked in any residential zone district or the OR zone be kept inside an enclosed side or rear yard, garage, or carport. If no side or rear yard is accessible because of existing legal permanent structures, the Community Development Director may allow driveway parking instead, provided it creates no nuisance or safety problem. Any RV or trailer visible from the street must still be maintained so it doesn't detract from the neighborhood.

Violations & Fines

The Community Development Director enforces the standard through the zoning code's general nuisance-abatement and citation process for zoning violations; a nonconforming RV or trailer can be ordered removed or relocated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I park my boat in my Hanford driveway?
Only if your side or rear yard is blocked by an existing permanent structure and the Community Development Director finds no nuisance or safety problem: otherwise it belongs in an enclosed yard, garage, or carport.
Does this rule apply to every Hanford residential zone?
Yes, § 17.54.200 applies to any residential zone district, covering R-L-12 through R-H, plus the OR zone.
