Portland, ME Parking Rules: RV & Boat Parking (2026)

Portland Code of Ordinances Sec. 28-58 targets recreational and oversized vehicles directly. Subsection (a) bars parking any motor vehicle exceeding 20 feet in length on a public street, public way, or publicly owned property inside a residentially zoned area during the months of November through March, the seasonal snow window when long vehicles most interfere with plowing. That prohibition doesn't apply to vehicles making deliveries, picking up or dropping off passengers, loading or unloading cargo, providing governmental, utility, or emergency services to abutting properties, or engaged in street construction or maintenance.

Subsection (c), added by Ord. No. 42-23/24 on 10-16-2023, is the operative rule for recreational vehicles specifically: no person may park any boat, camper, trailer, recreational vehicle, similar vehicle or snowmobile on any and all streets for more than 24 cumulative hours in any seven-calendar-day period. Because the section addresses on-street parking, it does not reach vehicles kept in a private driveway or yard. Enforcement runs through the same citation and towing machinery as the rest of Chapter 28, Sec. 28-59 makes unlawful parking prima facie evidence against the registered owner, and vehicles left in violation are subject to removal under the Division 6 towing provisions (Sec. ), including impoundment until towing and storage fees are paid. 00 release charge under Sec. 28-101(b).
