Jersey City, NJ Parking Rules: Snow Removal Parking Rules (2026)

Chapter 332, Article IV of the Jersey City Code sets out the city's snow-emergency parking regime. Section 332-34(A) states that "whenever snow has fallen and the accumulation is such that it covers the street or highway, no vehicle shall be parked on either side of any of the streets or parts thereof as listed below," followed by a lengthy table naming specific streets and the limits of the ban on each: many, like Bergen Avenue, Grove Street, Communipaw Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive, are banned for their "entire length," while others (Academy Street, Culver Avenue, Fairmount Avenue) are restricted only between named cross streets.

Section 332-34(B) extends the prohibition beyond the storm itself: parking stays illegal "after the snow has ceased until the streets have been plowed sufficiently and to the extent that parking will not interfere with the normal flow of traffic," so drivers can't assume the ban lifts the moment snow stops falling. Separately, § 332-35 lets the Chief of Police (or the ranking officer in the Chief's absence) declare a parking emergency for weather, accidents, fires or public celebrations and order temporary "EMERGENCY NO PARKING" signs posted; those signs alone constitute legal notice to a vehicle's owner or operator under § 332-35(B), independent of the standing snow-street list.

Vehicles left in violation are handled under § 332-36: an unoccupied car parked in violation of the article is declared a nuisance and traffic menace, and any police or parking-enforcement officer may have it towed, with the owner on the hook for reasonable towing and storage costs before the car is released. Signage must conform to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices under § 332-37(A), and the article's effectiveness is contingent on those signs actually being erected per § 332-37(B).
