Jersey City, NJ Parking Rules: Overnight Parking (2026)

City Code Chapter 332, Article III, §332-24, "Parking prohibited certain hours," provides that "No person shall park a vehicle between the times specified upon any of the streets, or parts thereof, listed below." The section is built entirely around a block-by-block schedule table that the Municipal Council has amended more than fifty times since 2010, most recently through Ordinance No. 25-016 in February 2025, adding and adjusting individual street segments as traffic conditions change. One entry illustrates a true overnight restriction: the north side of Van Winkle Avenue from Tonnele Avenue to Liberty Avenue is closed to parking nightly, with the schedule specifying "8:00 pm/Sun to 8:00 am/Sat" and "8:00 pm to 8:00 am/Sat to Sun." Most of the roughly 200 other listed segments carry weekday rush-hour or school-day windows rather than overnight hours, so a driver cannot assume an overnight ban applies without checking the posted sign for that block. §332-21 clarifies that these local time limits do not relieve drivers of the state-law parking rules in N.J.S.A.

39:4-138, which apply on top of the local schedule. Because no penalty is separately stated in §332-24 itself, the citywide default penalty set out in the fee and penalty schedule at Code §160-1 applies: a fine of not more than $50.00 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding five days, or both, per violation. Jersey City's Division of Traffic and Parking, within the Department of Public Safety, is responsible for enforcing the schedule and issuing summonses, and any vehicle left in violation long enough to become a hazard can also be towed under §332-76.
