Hammond, IN Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Section 72.005 of the Hammond Code of Ordinances sets the basic method-of-parking rule for every street in the City of Hammond, Indiana: a vehicle standing or parked on a roadway must be parallel to the curb, pointed in the direction of lawful traffic movement, with its right-hand wheels within 12 inches of the curb or roadway edge. Parking any other way, including backing in against the flow of traffic, violates the section unless another Chapter 72 provision specifically allows it. Angle parking is banned citywide except on the streets the city has designated in Chapter 77, Schedule I.

The same section protects room for traffic and access. No one may park a vehicle on a street in a way that leaves less than 10 feet of roadway width open for other vehicles to pass, and that same 10-foot clearance applies inside alleys. Alley parking carries an added rule: a vehicle cannot be stopped, stood or parked in an alley if doing so blocks the driveway entrance to an abutting property, a frequent complaint in Hammond's older residential blocks where garages open directly onto narrow alleys.

The Hammond Police Department issues citations for violations. Under § 72.999(B), a method-of-parking ticket carries a $50 penalty, which doubles to $100 if it is not paid within 60 days of issuance. A driver who wants a court date must request one from the city's Law Department within that same 60-day window, after which the fine may be adjusted by the court.
