Kenner, LA Property Maintenance: Vacant Lot Maintenance (2026)

Kenner Code of Ordinances § 9½-7(a)(2) applies specifically to unsubdivided parcels within city limits where public streets have not been installed, the code's definition of a vacant tract. It bars letting grass or weeds grow past fifteen inches, or letting trash, debris, refuse or other noxious matter accumulate, anywhere within a 300-foot-wide strip running around the entire perimeter of the property. Section 9½-7(b)(1) then makes the maintenance duty explicit: the owner must maintain that 300-foot perimeter by cutting or otherwise removing growth and keeping it under fifteen inches by mowing or cultivating the soil, and must also cut 100-foot-wide north-south fire lanes no more than 1,125 feet apart and east-west fire lanes no more than 2,000 feet apart across the larger vacant tract.

This differs from the stricter seven-inch, 150-foot standard that § 9½-7(a)(3) applies once a lot has a house, slab or building on it. Before the city acts, § 9½-7(c) requires notice to the owner of record and a five-day period to comply; after that, the city may do the work itself or through a contractor and bill the owner, including a $250.00 administrative charge, and may proceed without new notice for repeat violations within a rolling twelve months.
