Full Breakdown
Section 10.56.040 requires pedestrians crossing mid-block to go by a route at right angles to the curb, or the shortest direct route to the opposite curb, rather than diagonally or wandering, unless they're inside a marked crosswalk. Section 10.56.060 goes further in specific zones: between two intersections with working traffic signals, in any business district, and on any street designated a through street, pedestrians may cross only in a crosswalk, full stop. A pedestrian crossing outside a marked or unmarked crosswalk elsewhere in the city must also yield the right-of-way to all vehicles under § 10.56.050.
Violations & Fines
Jaywalking is a traffic infraction enforceable by citation; in a business district or a signaled block, crossing anywhere but a crosswalk is a violation regardless of traffic conditions.
