2 of the city's Fire Code amendments, adopted at Sec. 5 of the Code of Ordinances, makes it an offense to smoke or possess a burning tobacco, weed, or other plant product in a list of public and quasi-public places, including public libraries and museums, city meeting and hearing rooms open to public business, theaters and auditoriums outside the lobby, public elevators, retail and service establishments, food product establishments, bars, bowling centers, and hotel and motel common areas. Critically for outdoor spaces, subsection (a)(8) extends the ban to within 15 feet of any door, operable window or vent, or other opening into a place where smoking is prohibited, which is what reaches outdoor patios, sidewalks near entrances, and building perimeters even though the person is technically outdoors.

The owner or person in control of a regulated establishment must post a conspicuous sign at the main entrance under subsection (b), and commits a separate offense under subsection (c) for failing to post that sign, failing to advise a violator that smoking is not allowed, or failing to ask a willful violator to leave. 1.
